Uptown Whittier

Breakfast in an old house on Greenleaf.

We bake from scratch and cook American comfort food in a Craftsman bungalow with a garden out back. Come in, take a mismatched chair, and stay a while.

The House

It really is somebody's house.

The cafe sits in a Craftsman bungalow on Greenleaf Avenue, navy and cream, with a deep covered porch and a white picket fence out front. The sign hangs off the porch beam. The street number is painted on the wall.

Inside there are exposed rafters, Edison bulbs, floral wallpaper and a counter built out of reclaimed wood. Nothing matches on purpose. Spindle back chairs sit next to teal vinyl ones, small bistro tables next to big round family tables.

People keep writing the same thing in their reviews, which is that it feels like walking into a relative's kitchen. That is the whole idea.

“Great little spot that feels very much like you are in a home.”

The Kitchen

Big plates, made here.

Breakfast and lunch, cooked to order, with a bakery running in the back. The portions are the thing people mention most often, usually while explaining that they took half of it home.

  • French toast with strawberries, bananas and cream
  • The breakfast burrito, which people keep telling us is enormous
  • Salmon toast
  • Chicken and waffles, with a butter that melts down into both
  • Vegan zucchini bread
  • Whatever came out of the bakery that morning

What a darling establishment we stumbled upon! Warm and cozy atmosphere, the staff was amazing, accommodating, and friendly. We ate outside in the quaint porch area. I had the salmon toast which was scrumptious and my friend had the skillet. We ordered the vegan zucchini bread and it had great texture and flavor! The chai and mimosas were wonderful as well.

I have been traveling and enjoying people and food for over 40 years. I love it when i find that one apot that makes you feel special from the moment you come in to the smile and kindness from an owner who sees you are new and wants to enjoy the space she carefully made for us to feel warm.

We had the chicken and waffles with some kind of butter. This dish was excellent. You just need to have the butter melt on the fried chicken and you have an amazing chicken and waffles dish. I had the breakfast burrito and it was better then expected. If you have a chance to go here you will not be disappointed with the food.

Great little spot that feels very much like you are in a home. Seating was varied inside and out, different types of tables and chairs. The food itself, absolutely amazing! I cannot believe how large the servings are! My breakfast burrito was ginormous! I could only eat half of my food and was able to take the other half home for later!

We would rather send you home with a box than have you leave hungry. It happens most days.
